We are not meant to live the isolated lives that the pandemic has cornered us into. I am very much an introvert who needs a lot of quiet to get focused, AND also, I’m someone who is more efficient with their time and better at follow through if I am working within community. For these reasons and so many more, I created Parallel Play this summer and have been hosting it monthly ever since. It’s a place for us to literally parallel play together, a space created for us to be in community together but focused on our own stuff.
Parallel play defined: involves two or more children playing side-by-side without interacting. Children may simply observe the other children in the same space, mimic one another’s actions, or focus on their own play while subconsciously mimicking the energy of other players.
After researching different types of children’s play for one of my books, I noticed how grown ups function SO similarly on an unconscious level when we co-work together in actually supportive spaces. In the dark days of the pandemic, I had one friend I felt safe sharing space with and we would trade off visiting each other to essentially parallel play while one person cleaned their home. Without another body there, without feeling someone else focused on a project, the task of cleaning just felt too hard to do alone. But by having the presence of a nonjudgmental friend in shared space, cleaning was possible. Do you sometimes relate to just needing a friend around to get someone done?
Parallel Play is here for you.
